An entry-level underwriting position may be available with a bank, insurance agency or a financial agency. The most known entry-level underwriting positions are trainee underwriter, medical underwriter, health benefits underwriter, entry-level underwriting assistant, casualty underwriter, assistant underwriter and so on.Typical duties of an entry-level underwriting position include evaluating and underwriting applications for insurance by assessing mortality and morbidity risks so as to meet the company's financial objectives; approving, classifying, or declining applications as found appropriate; determining whether to accept or decline risk through evaluation of medical history, occupational hazards; maintaining contact with field sales force; reviewing and acting on reinstatements and changes to existing policies. An entry-level underwriting professional typically reports to an underwriting manager.
An entry-level underwriting professional should have a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field. Excellent academic credentials are required. Strong mathematical ability is essential for an entry-level underwriting position.
