Underwriting Manager Location: Fort Lee, NJ Position Summary: This role is responsible for managing commercial underwriting team in the New Jersey office, providing leadership and responsible for business results through profitability, business development, analysis, as well as attracting and developing underwriting talent. Underwriting Manager will manage day to day commercial lines underwriting activities with a high degree of technical complexity and coordination. This role will direct and resolve underwriting performance issues, including those identified in market conduct exams and audits. The role will also have significant input to business strategies and the responsibility for the execution of those strategies. This position reports to the Director of Underwriting. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Manage for the execution of commercial underwriting processes consistent with regional objectives. Ensure best underwriting practices development and implementation. Manage team of underwriters by coaching, training, disciplining and monitoring their performance. Work as member of a team with managers across the department to ensure continuous improvement in operational results and process efficiencies. Manage underwriting process and workload; evaluating work results; enforcing underwriting guidelines and productivity standards in collaboration with underwriters. Ensure that book of business is built and managed profitably and within the strategies developed by the company. Collaborate with Director of Underwriting on strategic initiatives as directed. Ensure UW is represented in the product management process as defined and collaborate with Marketing, Claims and IT for automation development process. Represent UW throughout the company as collaborative and open to new possibilities with initiative, innovation and problem solving. Provide quality customer service by enforcing quality standards; analyzing customer service issues; recommending system and process improvements. Accept, suggest modifications to, or rejects underwriter referrals by applying company underwriting standards and utilizing proper risk evaluations within your assigned underwriting authority.Complete necessary administrative work by (including, but not limited to) approving time sheet on a bi-weekly basis; approving PTO as appropriate; operating within departmental and company guidelines and standards. Create a high performance culture through effective communication and quality goal setting, differentiation of compensation and performance, proactive management of low performers and retention of top performers Ability to interact, influence, and develop relationships within all levels and areas of the organization Ensure achievement of gross written premium, retention, and new business plans Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to effectively lead, coach and develop underwriting staff Advanced technical expertise, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills; ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners Ability to manage and prioritize projects Ability to practice, teach and coach effective sales disciplines Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems Ability to achieve business goals and objectives Strong knowledge of small business operations Job Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, economics or related field Relevant professional designations, such as CPCU, are highly desirable A minimum of 5 years of Underwriting Experience in commercial lines underwriting including at least 2 years management experience Knowledge of small business operations in product lines of BOP, CPP, and Umbrella Experience working with rating engines Ability to travel – less than 20% Compensation: Fully paid insurance package (health, dental, disability and life including spouse and children up to age of 26) Other benefit information will be provided at the time of offer
