Underwriting jobs are typically filled by people that have excellent communication skills in group settings and can work well as part of a team. A large portion of time is spent working as part of a team of underwriters and managers so teamwork is essential in an underwriter job. Not only is verbal communication a vital part of the position, written communication skills are very valuable as well. This does, often time, require that you are proficient with computer applications that will allow the communication to be performed very quickly.

To be a success at underwriting jobs you will also need to be able to speak professionally and be very tactful. This is because you will be dealing directly with the lenders and borrowers. A vital part of the underwriter jobs is attentiveness to details. In this position you will be asked to monitor financial portfolios and to be very accurate when doing so. You should also work on your analytical capabilities if you are pursuing one of the underwriting jobs. You will be looked to for guidance from the team of underwriters so you must be able to gather together, provide interpretation for, and present the data in a way that will be understood by all.

Another great way to make a break into an underwriting job is to be bilingual. If you can speak a second language, such as Spanish, you are more valuable to a company then an applicant that only speaks English. Your language abilities may mean the difference between you getting the position and the next applicant getting the position.

To build work experience in the field, try to obtain jobs that will give you experience with managing portfolios and certain inventories. If you can do this daily for a period of time, this experience will look well on an application for underwriting jobs. Underwriter jobs are great positions to hold and if you are serious about getting into the position you should take the necessary steps to ensure you a better chance against your competition.
