Mortgage Underwriter Jobs

A mortgage underwriter job involves managing the residential/consumer loan underwriting unit to ensure business needs are addressed and proper risk management is covered. A mortgage underwriter must have in-depth understanding of the competitive mortgage industry environment and the mortgage insurance business; mortgage insurance programs, policies and services; and operations and processes: business development, underwriting, claims processing, and market housing programs. A mortgage underwriter should readily be able to customize responses and advice to reflect the specific conditions which may apply based on differences in the market conditions and provincial legislation related to specific applications. A mortgage underwriter builds and maintains effective working relationships with mortgage intermediaries, and assesses and processes applications according to lender criteria. A mortgage underwriter provides technical knowledge to sometimes complex queries, needs technical knowledge along with a polite and professional attitude, monitors the residential/consumer loan portfolio and takes timely and appropriate action to ensure that loan asset quality remains satisfactory.

A mortgage underwriter requires a bachelor's degree or previous mortgage underwriting experience. A mortgage underwriter should have ability to work under pressure and to prioritize workload, present and discuss information pertinent to an assignment valuing and respecting individual's good communication skills. A mortgage underwriter should be detail oriented/organized individual.
